What are the precautions to take when processing titanium alloy

What are the precautions to take when processing titanium alloy Due to the low elastic modulus of titanium alloys, the clamping deformation and stress deformation of the workpiece during processing are significant, which can reduce the machining accuracy of the workpiece. When mounting the workpiece, the clamping force should not be too large; auxiliary supports can be added if necessary.
If a cutting fluid containing hydrogen is used, hydrogen gas will be released during the cutting process due to decomposition at high temperatures. This hydrogen gas can be absorbed by titanium, causing hydrogen embrittlement, and may also lead to high-temperature stress corrosion cracking of titanium alloys.
When using cutting fluid containing chlorides, there is a possibility of decomposition or volatile toxic gases. Safety precautions should be taken during use; otherwise, it should not be used. After cutting, parts should be thoroughly cleaned with a non-chlorinated cleaning agent to remove any chlorine residues.
It is prohibited to use tools and fixtures made of lead or zinc-based alloys in contact with titanium alloys. Similarly, the use of copper, tin, cadmium, and their alloys is also prohibited.
All tools, fixtures, or other devices that come into contact with titanium alloys must be clean; cleaned titanium alloy parts should be protected from grease or fingerprint contamination, as this may lead to stress corrosion cracking caused by salt (sodium chloride) in the future.
Under normal circumstances, there is no risk of ignition when cutting titanium alloys. Only during micro-cutting do the tiny chips cut off ignite and burn. To avoid fires, in addition to pouring a large amount of cutting fluid, it is also necessary to prevent the chips from accumulating on the machine tool. Replace the dull tool immediately, or reduce the cutting speed and increase the feed rate to increase the thickness of the chips. If a fire occurs, use fire-fighting equipment such as talcum powder, limestone powder, and dry sand to extinguish it. It is strictly prohibited to use carbon tetrachloride or carbon dioxide fire extinguishers, and water should not be used either, as it can accelerate combustion and even lead to hydrogen explosion.
